The Medium vs Substack debate has been a thing in the blogging world for quite some time now. These two blogging platform giants are constantly being compared to each other…

… so let’s do it one more time.

I write on both platforms. I can see the pros and cons of both, and I would like to share my thoughts on them with you.

I will be outlining three of the main aspects of both of them and how they differ from each other.

Income

This might be the biggest factor of them all. Many of us have one source of income and it’s blogging.

So how are Medium and Substack different when it comes to income?

Well, essentially…

Medium = Reading time / Substack = paid subsciptions

This is basically how they work.

An article on Medium will get money if it gets read for a certain amount of time. On Substack, people have to subscribe to you and pay for it, too. However, money on Medium isn’t all that great a lot of the time, even if it is reliable. Paid subscriptions are somewhat hard to get, but the money…
