On Medium, Some Experts Are More Equal than Others
There are wrong topics on this platform
Since his first interview, Medium’s CEO told us that this platform rewards experts sharing their knowledge. His definition of expert is inspiring: anyone with direct experience with something. A parent with a 1-year-old child is an expert in 1-year-old parenting.
These words filled me with hope. They promised the most democratic writing platform ever. Out the fake experts lying to sell their products and services. In the actual experts sharing with generosity.
A couple years have passed. I’m disillusioned and disappointed.
I tried everything
To reward experts, Medium introduced the Boost. If you’re new here, here’s how it works:
- you submit or publish an article,
- a Boost nominator (usually the editor of a publication) nominates it,
- a curator (a Medium employee) accepts or rejects the nomination.
Boosted articles get many more views and earnings than non-Boosted ones.
I have been writing articles for the Boost at least since September 2023. The results are confusing. It’s impossible to predict what will be Boosted.
