Presently I’m reading Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resist by Sally Hogshead. And the one strategy she drills down is this.

It’s always best to be different than your competitors rather than better.

Here’s why.

  • If you compete to be better than your competition it’s a race to the bottom.
  • Always look for differentiators between your brand and your competitor’s brand.
  • Sometimes even if it’s a negative it can work.

Let’s explore this…

If you compete to be better than your competition it’s a race to the bottom.

Multiple competitors arise in every category and for good reason.

Trying to outdo a market leader in a category is a no-no. When you try to get better, you lower the price and that’s not a good strategy. Other competitors can rise and force you to further lower your price.

That’s a recipe for disaster as you’ll quickly be ousted from the market.
