Shoes on, psyche up, banana in my belly, Strava ready.

Go.

I take off in a stride. I’m speeding down along the canal, zooming past unassuming passers-by on the first mile.

I’m a couple of miles in now. I huff. I pant. My lungs flare up. The cold air envelops my face. I question why I’m doing this; it’s a dreadful experience. I catch glimpses of geese frolicking on the water. Are they smirking back at me?

Three miles in, I’m questioning everything. I imagine the warm, soapy bath I should be enjoying right now. I long for the comfort of my couch, wrapped in my woolly throw.

I hate running, I figured again for the umpteenth time.

By the fourth mile, my mind is in a daze, and my legs are dragging on. It feels like I’m in a trance. It’s a mental and physical hurdle that is never present without the other.

And when I finally cross the ‘finish line’ — my doorstep — I crumble onto the floor, catching my breath and taking respite from earlier suffering.
