Stop Writing Like You’re an Employee

Six months into my writing journey, I stared at my screen in frustration. Despite publishing consistently on Medium, my stats remained flat. That “build it and they will come” promise felt like a cruel joke.

I almost joined the 95% of writers who quit before seeing results.

What changed wasn’t some magical writing technique or algorithm hack.

The trap of employee thinking

Most of us start writing while juggling day jobs and other responsibilities. This creates an invisible barrier I call “employee thinking” which is when you approach creative work with the same mindset we bring to our 9-to-5.

In a traditional job, you:

  • Work set hours
  • Complete assigned tasks
  • Receive a consistent paycheck
  • Follow someone else’s vision

This mindset serves you well as an employee. But as a writer trying to build a sustainable business, it becomes your biggest obstacle.
