Wachal Lee with Adol carried out a fundamental cookie jar study which became public in 1975. Participants viewed two containers wherein the first contained many cookies yet the second one had few cookies. Although the cookies were identical, individuals selected foods from the limited-jar container instead of the abundant one. People found cookies to be more desirable because they perceived them to be scarce in this setting which reveals intriguing mental processes.

Why Are We Drawn to Scarcity?

Research using cookie jars demonstrates an inherent mental pattern through which people instinctively seek out scarce items. The shortage of something automatically elevates its value in our eyes. Every form of resource or ties that become rare experience increased value through this psychological effect.
