People often think that software engineers only care about the software they use and rarely care about the hardware.

That’s the worst take ever. You might have seen crazy desktop setups and believe that they are the default for software developers. Nope.

Less than 5% of developers will have this setup

I also don’t care much about hardware, but I don’t want to sacrifice my productivity just because of carelessness.

Here is the list of top hardware and other products that I use in 2025 to improve my productivity as a software engineer.

My Laptop

This one’s the obvious and most expensive item. You might think I use the latest MacBook Pro, which costs around $2500+.

Nope! I’m not an Apple fanboy — in fact, most people in my circle don’t use MacBooks.

MacBook is known for its efficiency, but my whole belief system is, “It’s not the tools; it’s the carpenter.

Most of the time, it’s 99% skill and only 1% hardware.

I use an ASUS VivoBook Pro 15 OLED with an AMD Ryzen 7 Octa-Core R7–4800H processor, and it cost a little less than $1000. The good…
