Why You Should Be Writing On Substack

It’s 2025 and choosing a good, viable blogging platform is a nightmare. But… it doesn’t have to be! There are many, many options and there are many, many articles telling us which to choose. Of course, you don’t have to pick just one, but for my money (literally), I say, go for Substack.

How it works

Substack is a subscription-based blogging platform where you subscribe to someone’s newsletter, either through a free or a paid subscription. Some people might prefer the readership-based websites, like Medium, as they are more reliable in terms of income, and while I may fall in that category, there is something to be said for subscription/newsletter-based platforms. People will subscribe to you and actively engage with your articles and that, in turn, will generate more and more traffic, which will inevitably lead to paid subscriptions. And the money you get from those is pretty good. Plus there’s something really cute and old school about getting newsletters.

I love writing about film noir on The Losers of Film Noir on Substack. I find it to be the easiest platform for such a specific topic, whereas Medium is more on the miscellaneous side of things, at least for me. Substack was made for niche and specific content. And because…
