Sounds weird, right? “Your best is not the best every day.”

A few days ago at the gym, I was doing some bench presses when a random guy stopped and watched me doing my reps. When he saw that I was not adding more weights for my next set, he approached me and offered to spot me if I wanted to add more weight.

I was already lifting close to my PR — 100 KG/220 pounds.

I told him that, and he convinced me to add a little more, even if I could only do one or two reps. The important thing, he said, was to push myself and let my body adapt to new weights.

But what he told me in our conversation made me think: Your best is not the best every day.

What the hell does that mean?

I always thought that doing your best meant one thing: each day, you have to improve on yesterday and overcome whatever issue you had the day before.
