Your Writing is Boring Without This Brutal Fact

What sets you apart from other writers is not the type of content you write.

It’s how you explain the content.

So stop looking for “niches” to write about without considering how you say it. There are thousands of people writing in the same niche as you. Let’s say you like writing about making money online. There are many more people (often much more qualified than you) who write about this topic already. So why would anyone decide to click on your post, when they can go to a bigger guru who has 50k more followers than you do? Just finding some niche to write about will never make you unique. In fact, you will be compared with everyone else in that niche and you will lose.

When you start playing Geometry Dash, and beat Stereo Madness (the first level), you feel like you’re on top of the world. But when you go on online forums of people who have finished the final level 2 years ago. So if a new geometry dash player wanted to get advice, who would they go to? You or that top player? It’s a losing battle for writers.

You want to focus on how you’re writing your message.

CASE STUDY: Mark Manson

Mark Manson is a self-help guru, authoring the bestselling book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. The biggest reason why his advice resonates with people is because of the way he delivers it. He is scathingly honest. Brutally honest. He won’t sugarcoat his message. He’ll tell you what you need to hear. And people like that.

Entertaining vs. Educating

Where are you on that spectrum of educating to entertaining? Too much of either is detrimental: nobody wants to hear a lecture and nobody wants to get zero value. It’s the golden mean. Find the middle ground. Remember that you want to get and keep your audience’s attention. Focus on what makes you a different entertainer. Do you tell funny stories, heartbreaking stories, or tell dark jokes? Think about what you want, and stick to it.

People read your stories because they like how you present ideas. If they like how you present your ideas, they will be open to more genres of ideas. The inverse is also true: if readers are only interested in your topic, they will be interested in other writers who write about your topic. Make your audience stick with you by explaining it with your own voice.
