As a teenager, I arrived in the United States with the American Dream—the search for happiness and success through commitment and endurance. The journey of any immigrant arriving in the States is filled with obstacles and challenges, starting from scratch and building a future from nothing. My story was no different.

I came to the United States from Bangladesh with nothing. I learned, adapted, and overcame obstacles, graduating high school and college and now going to graduate school. "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe was one of my biggest inspirations for never giving up while helping me learn English and making me fall in love with reading books.

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." — Frederick Douglass.

I read "Robinson Crusoe" as a teenager, as part of an ESL program in high school, and again a decade later this year. It was the first book I ever finished reading. The classic book for the ages follows Robinson Crusoe’s journey from a shipwreck survivor to a resilient, self-sufficient castaway.
