If you’re writing to have fun, goals may not be that important to you. On the other hand, if you’re writing because you want to publish some day then having goals can be very important. Writing that long novel, getting editing done, or submitting that manuscript all take time and effort and if you just leave it up to chance you may never reach your dreams. Knowing why you should set goals and how best to set them can get you on the best track to meeting them.

Try to make your dreams come true

The best reason to write down your goal is that it can help you work towards making your dreams come true. There’s no guarantee that you’ll publish that book, but you can certainly finish writing that book or editing it. And you’ll never know if you can get that book published unless you try. At worst you’ll know you gave yourself your best shot to succeed.

Motivation

A big reason to set goals is for motivation. Maybe you’ve wanted to write that novel that’s been rolling around in the back of your mind for months but just can’t get started.
