Don’t Wait for a Safe Place to Jump

Do you remember the first time you flung yourself off a diving board into the school or community swimming pool? Did you hesitate for just a moment, trying to find or regain your balance? Trying to grab onto a feeling of safety and security before you took the leap?

You were trying to find a safe place to jump.

There’s no safe place to jump into writing

I think a lot of us try to do that in our writing. We get stuck before we ever write the first word because we’re trying to find our safe spot to start.

And there is none.

“There’s no appropriate place, no safe place to jump off into your writing.”

Barbara Abercrombie, A Year of Writing Dangerously

We do that in our Christian lives too, don’t we?

God calls us to do something, and we often delay responding until we get to a safe and comfortable place.

Then what happens?

Waiting for a safe place delays obedience

We never get to that spot where we feel ready, and so we never walk out in obedience. Or we wait before we obey.

And delayed obedience is always disobedience.

I’m reminded of that one guy Jesus asked to follow Him.

“He said to another man, ‘Follow me.’
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’” (Luke 9:59, NIV)

The guy was willing to follow Jesus, apparently. He just had some things he wanted to do before he got started.

But did he ever get started?

If you wait till you get all your affairs in order, you’ll never get started. In writing, or in life. Especially the Christian life.

He is your safe place

If God has called you to write, and if you’re reading this, chances are good that He has, don’t wait for a safe place to jump. You’ve already found it.

He is the safe place.

All you have to do is show up and write. Trust Him to help you know what to say and to help you get it done. He’s the One who’s called you. He will equip you.

And He will get your words out to the people who need to read them.
