Writing About Your Kind of Hell Could Help Someone Else Get Through Theirs

“You know, we do live in ludicrous ignorance of each other. I mean, we usually don’t know the things we’d like to know even about our supposedly closest friends. I mean, suppose you’re going through some kind of hell in your own life. Well, you would love to know if your friends have experienced similar things. But we really don’t dare to ask each other.”

Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, My Dinner with André

Have you ever thought that, by writing your story and getting it out there, it can help someone else who’s going through something similar?

I have, and it’s one of the reasons I keep writing. One of the reasons I’ve considered writing a memoir, even though I haven’t been brave enough to try it yet. One of these days, maybe I will.

But I try to put a little bit of my truth into everything I write.

The above quote takes that old writing maxim, “Write what you know,” a bit deeper.

Write the kind of hell you know. Reading about how you’ve gotten through it can help someone else who’s going through it now. Especially if you write about how God helped you get through it.

“He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:4, HCSB)

God wants us to share what we’ve been through with others. He wants us to share how He has brought us through, so that others can be encouraged.

Let’s take off the masks. Let’s be real. In writing and in life. There’s freedom and healing in that.
