There can be some confusion on what queries are and what they should include and if they are similar to proposals. Let’s dive into the differences.

Submitting to Literary Agents: Queries & Proposals

Queries are not sent to publishers, they are sent to agents.

A literary agent is a professional book agent who acts on behalf of an author to sell your book to publishers, help with manuscript and concept editing, then deal with publishers and others promoting an author’s book. There are many literary agents and agencies and you want to query ones who specifically represent your genre and type of book.

Find agents by searching online for ones in your genre and reading their bios and information on their websites to see exactly the type of books they represent and are requesting. You can also search on Manuscript Wish List to see information directly from agents on what they are looking for.
