Healthcare For Freelance Writers
Substack is changing the writing game
Substack continues to make major moves. If you haven’t heard of it, Substack is a platform where you can create a newsletter, build an email list, and even make money. Creating a newsletter and building an email list is free. You can opt to make your newsletter a paid venture, charging people whatever you want, you can make it free, or a little bit of both. If you opt to charge for your newsletter, Substack takes 10%.
There are no ads. The platform is user-friendly, easy to figure out, and customizable. You can even load stuff you have written elsewhere easily into your feed. I created my newsletter there earlier this year and I do both. I provide a free letter weekly and I have a paid subscription for people if they want access to more writing, playlists, and fun stuff I come across like recipes and travel tips.
I don’t make my living there…yet. That’s the thing — you totally can and a lot of writers already are. There are newsletters about everything under the sun. One guy is watching every ’80s movie ever made and writing about it. The options are endless.
My newsletter is more personal and gritty than what I write on Medium. It’s less-polished — in a good way. It’s more free-range and conversational. It’s a weekly field guide, of sorts, that reassures you that you don’t need to sweat the small stuff, you can be successful doing what you love, and also…dogs are the best. I have to throw in dogs somewhere. Because dogs are the best. Substack is making huge moves. This healthcare thing is just the latest.
So, yes, you need to have $5,000 in gross revenue on their platform, but the fact that they have even thought of this and have started to implement it is huge. It speaks volumes about how they are trying to help freelance writers. They have also begun to accept Bitcoin as payment for newsletters, customize what gets put behind a paywall, and embed files as well as NFTs. OMG — what?
The options on Substack appear to be endless and they are still working on them. I get emails every week with a new update. The platform that Substack is building is exciting. The opportunities for writers there are really cool.
Writing a newsletter is just one more thing, I get it. When I started mine I just dove in, having little idea what I was doing. Now, it holds me accountable for writing it every week. I get to be creative and have fun. I don’t have to think about getting accepted into a slick publication. It’s cool. It makes me think in a new way and drives creativity.
I will still write on Medium too because I love it. The community here is awesome. I still think it’s one of the most beautiful places to craft words on the internet.
Substack is an alternative. A newsletter there pairs nicely with writing here. The opportunities there are different, innovative, and writer-centrist. I can’t wait to hear about what they come up with next. Healthcare for freelance writers? Wow. Okay. I have a feeling more cool stuff is coming.
