If you were to consider the most influential writer to attract young readers in the 20th century, it would be hard to argue against EB White. Born in 1899, White began his writing career doing everything from journalism to copywriting and advertising.

“Life is like writing with a pen. You can cross out your past but you can’t erase it.”

With the encouragement of his niece, Elwyn Brooks White turned to children’s literature and created Stuart Little in 1945. Although his first attempt at a children’s novel was met initially with mediocre results, White created Charlotte’s Web, which won him wide acclaim, and he followed that masterpiece with The Trumpet of the Swan.

His books are now considered among the best in the genre, with Charlotte’s Web voted the most popular book of children's fiction of the 20th century. White was presented with a special Pulitzer Prize for his body of work in 1978.
