in the dark silence
of midnight,
rainwater seeps
down through the
soil of decades,
a child’s tears
activating a
dormant root system.

tendrils of panic
wrap around me,
dragging me back
into a storm
that refuses to be
left behind.

memories flash
like lightning,
each one a brief burst
illuminating a
scared little boy
in a light blue sleeper
standing next to my bed,
digging his nails
into my mattress,
as I dig mine
into my palms.

cover my eyes
(help me forget
how to see),

cover my ears
(help me forget
how to hear),
