I’m ‘downunder’ in Australia so it’s actually Spring for us right now but that hasn’t stopped me from responding to Tree Langdon’s invitation to join the #8 poetry challenge she’s running at Write Under the Moon.

Tree posed the question:

What does winter evoke for you?

Winter is relatively mild for us in Australia. It doesn’t snow in Melbourne where I live, but we get enough icy winds and grey days to make complaining about the ‘cripplingly cold’ a chronically constant topic of conversation.

We forget how lucky we are.

Ever the optimist, when I think of Winter, I think of the little things I look forward to in the season — the things that bring me comfort, joy, and a sense of the familiar. I brought some of them together in this tanka —

my mum’s pumpkin soup
aroma of damper bread
fresh from the oven
hearty serve of Medium
by the fire in my oodie
