Retirement.

Most of us look forward to the day we can say goodbye to our bosses and our nine to five jobs.

We work hard for years and sock money away, focusing on the moment in the future when we will be able to leave the traditional workforce behind.

Little by little that nest egg for the future grows until we finally have enough money to live on.

We dream about having more free time to do what we want.

When someone retires, there is an expectation they will find more freedom to choose what you do every day.

Our workplace friends are in on the lies we tell ourselves, reinforcing the tales we spin. It’s like a dream vacation in some ways. We imagine we’ll finally have the time to get fit and work on that hobby. We’ll take up guitar or painting and become better golfers.

Now that I’ve made retirement a reality, I have realized I’d created a few myths about life after work.

Myth #1

When you retire you will be healthier.

My fitness goals have always been a combination of fear and social pressure.
