Fox versus the Dark Elf
A short story
Along the border of the Crystallized Rapids and the Chaos Forest
As he approaches the den, Sparey can see all kinds of debris blocking the entrance. Being so close to the Chaos Forest, a freak storm must have blown through and littered the shore with branches, leaves, and small rocks. Funny how there was no sign of a storm over in the Open Field, but that wasn’t unusual.
Sparey rummages through the debris, shoveling it out of the way so he could get into his home, mumbling to himself, Damnit, just what I need. There’s always more work to do when I’m in a freaking hurry. Why does this crap always fall in front of my doorway? I guess it’s better than crashing through my roof.
This extra work distracts him from noticing the two dark elves walking in the forest about twenty paces beyond the opposite shoreline. The two “hikers” notice Sparey, though, slowing their pace and moving quietly behind the trees. They are just deep enough into the wooded area to be camouflaged, but not so far away that if Sparey turns around, he might see them. Being dark elves, they are stealthy creatures and can disappear quickly if need be.
