Legacies and Longings
Free Verse
Prologue:
Legacies matter. Here’s where the whole range of emotions are chained,
joining the past to present, and perhaps, the present to future.
I go down lanes of parched journals-like memories,
preview suppressed stories of resilience,
stories I’ve been told, then wanting to change some
of those narratives for my parents and forefathers - those but
now concealed in the unassailable cobwebs of deeply buried caskets…
Interlude:
Amidst the lacy arabesque cloudiness
and shaded sepia spaces, moss-filled walls go on with
their perpetual whisperings about tales of
yards of rock sugar candies, dry coconuts, and fragrant soaps, and
small grocery outlets — the métiers that sustained my ancestors,
with hopes for their generations too.
Airless and raggedy portraits disclose white lies:
A fabricated propinquity of youth and senility secluded in echoes,
and while I stare intensely, “they evade” me,
akin to meaningless times of fuzzy fetes and vague birthdays,
and then “I evade them” on the renunciation of hopes they had for us.
