Maybe it was in front of you
the whole time
the love you needed to know.

The love you nearly let escape through a busted clasp of a locket you never bothered to fill with a photo — marking the beginning — because no moment ever feels like the first but an unfolding of another.

How do you even begin to memorialize the first glance when the rest of your life was held in the sculptors grasp endlessly pounding then melding the clay from one obstacle to another.

Did you even have a chance to choose another way?

Why is it the poet’s task to nail down the past. present. future all in one line… as if it could be done — as if it could be done — though we try. again and again we try to scaffold time — molding in the memories to keep it all from slipping away.

As we close one year and enter another, this poem feels fitting to share with all of you poets who keep me inspired and motivated to write. I carry your words inside a deeply coveted locket where imagination flourishes. Wishing peace and fecundity of imagination to all of you in the new year.
