Maya cries and
cries —

she is the world
and she cries
and cries

she cries for the
bombed children,
for the butchered
animals, for the
raped earth

even as she gets
her knives out,
as she lusts for
more food and
land, more money,
more possessions

she is Machiavellian,
this Maya, she is hot
and cold and she
cannot stop creating
and destroying

and we are implicated,
you and me —
caught up in this
torture wheel of
tit for tat, my flag
against your flag,
US against Russia,
US against China,
against, against, against,
Israel against Palestine,
the right against the left,
the west against the east —
