Rabbit Man pushing himself up out of the mud and water.

He had no shot and no opportunity
to seize everything he ever wanted.
If it was you, would you let it slip by
or reach to the sky to capture it?

His rabbit ears slouching,
whisker tips sweaty, hole in
his sweater from a cigarette
he let burn too long,
he’s high as a kite,
eyelids heavy,
but he’s still ready.

Rabbit Man wakes with a mouth
full of puddle water,
shirt crusted in dirt
and scratches all over his face.

What happened
the night before,
Was he kicked to the curb
in a drunken rage?

Head pounding,
sunlight too bright,
looking around
no clue what he did wrong
and shaking with fright.

Dusting off, straightening
sleeves, and fixing his ears,
Rabbit Man pulls another cigarette
from his pocket
and…
