Solemn Day
Poetry

A squirrel
Skitters along,
Collecting
It’s mid-afternoon
Snack.
Zipping along,
Playing hide and seek,
Ducking under
Fallen, burnt colored
Leaves.
Birds perched
High above
On tree branches
Stripped
Of all their clothes.
Deer
On the hill,
Feeding
On the grass,
Observing
Cars that
Pass.
And I…
Standing,
Eyes closed,
Head lowered,
Talking to loved ones
Long gone and dead.
The cemetery
Silent,
Despite all of
Nature’s activity.
Stories
Solemnly told
Over time
To you and me.
