The Accident (Part 4)
A Short Story
Darkness envelopes me.
A light is flashed in my eyes and Wendy stands before me. She motions for me to follow her down the darkened path. There is a constant dripping sound as we walk down the cement encased tunnel.
It feels like we have been walking for a long time and then I suddenly realize where Wendy is taking me.
I am back in The Underground.
A place I tried so hard to get away from. A place I called home for so many years because it was the only place that accepted me for who I was and who I wanted to be.
And now, I am back.
Wendy says nothing, she just continues walking. I remember this long circuitous journey to The Underground. The creators couldn’t make it easy. They thought too many could find this place if it were right there for the world to find. I don’t remember walking into the apartment building though. How did I get past the woman who is usually sitting right inside? Did Wendy know I was coming? I don’t even remember coming back to New York. What is happening to me?
Wendy pulls a key from her pocket and unlocks the door. As she opens it, the smells and sounds of this underground society smack me in the face like a steamy summer day.
