A Poem

A woman in a forest green dress faces the camera, her hands cradling those of a man unseen except for his arms wrapped around her pregnant belly from behind.

The moment life begins
‘neath silver-lighted midwife’s squint,
they arrive sparks crackled out,
a thrill,
gradually yielding to dread,
her first thirst unquenched
as Fr. Society desires.
Birthed art though due its place
cannot compete what for the weight
lifted from him.
In heat, ingredients stew,
plump fruit bursting forth
acidity,
giving this concoction its chigger bite,
when those alleviated
invite grim delivery.
No other the wiser,
she puts it in her jar,
quietly doing nature’s work
to remedy man’s coercion.
