We’ve all read crap novels. We know they’re crap after the first couple paragraphs.

But we keep reading.

To the bitter end.

Why?

Because not even the worst writing in the world is strong enough to stop the power of story.

This is great news for the worst writers in the world. If they’ve got story on their side, not even they can stop themselves.

Story is everything.

Even the best writers in the world are lost without it.

Ye gods of literary talent, are you neglecting story, trying to win the masses by the brilliance and beauty of your prose alone? Are you frustrated and confused when people read your stuff and say (they always say), “It’s gorgeous! The images are unforgettable! And what a vocabulary you have! Your story’s like reading a dictionary, but in a good way!”

They never say, “What a good story! I couldn’t put it down! It was morning when I started reading, but when I looked up, it was night! I didn’t notice! In addition, I voided my waste right in this nice chair! Didn’t notice that either. You’re a story wizard! You owe me…
