Poetry Saves My Soul
I posted this photo of Lewis Carroll’s famous Alice in Wonderland quote on my IG page. A fellow poet, Mae Foreman took it to the next level. She turned it into a poetry prompt and promised to read the poems today, Saturday, 11/7/2020, at 12 PM EST.
I shared my poem with a tag she associated with the challenge. #impossiblemorningchallenge. I couldn’t wait to hear her read all the poems.
As soon as I signed on to her IG Live, I could tell something was going on in the background. She sounded nervous. I heard chanting, yelling, sirens. Then gunshots.
I felt her fear and confusion. What was going on?!
Mae said she lives in Greece and riots were happening because of the lockdown.
She bravely continued to read all the poems amid the chaos. She had to start over a few times because of the loud and distracting noise. She kept apologizing.
Shock and awe is how I would describe my feelings in that moment. I was shocked by hearing the riots right outside her window. I have never been that close to mass violence before, thank God. I was in awe that she was reading the poems rather than running for cover. That’s for sure what I would have done.
I rarely cry. I’d rather put quarters in the swear jar, but I couldn’t contain my emotions. I cried for her bravery and for poetry calming her during these terrifying times.
