With winter’s chill (and snow!) in the air, you may be considering packing up your camping gear, if you haven’t already. But wait. You do know there are places for year-round camping, right? You can still pack a tent, tow a trailer, or fly in and rent at a good number of locations in the U.S. Obviously, that inclement weather can creep into any of these campgrounds, even Hawaii’s Big Island, so plan accordingly.

Winter camping tips

Before you head out, here are a few things to think about:

  • Layer everything including clothing, sleeping bags, and tent floors
  • Never use propane heaters in a closed environment unless they specifically state they can be used that way
  • Leave a travel plan with someone
  • Keep a close watch on weather forecasts
  • Take extra rations of food and water, particularly on hikes
  • Carry fire-starting supplies with you at all times, but obey fire regulations in place at each campground
