In the last few days, I have read several articles about train journeys including this lovely one by Anne Bonfert. Must be the universe’s way of telling me to write one!

Some of my own train journey memories have been swirling around in my head for a while now.

Indian Railways

Indian Railways is the fourth largest railway network in the world with over 138,000 kms of coverage length. It is the backbone of the country with a population of approximately 1.3 billion people. To serve the length and breadth of a country with such diversity, Indian Railways caters to all kinds of travelers — from ordinary trains for daily commuters to the ultra-luxurious Palace on Wheels.

Little wonder then, that you get to see a slice of the country in each railway station, and savor the essence of India on every train journey.

Trains and train stations in India bring a rush of very ‘railway station-ish’ memories. Each train and each station has a personality that we slowly recognize over time.
