Writers On The Run Submission guidelines.

Me overlooking my version of heaven.

This publication is for wanderlusters. You know who you are.

You’re the type who can’t just travel. You need to travel, learn, document, grow, and tell the world about your experiences.

The inspiration behind starting this publication came from being a travel blogger and published travel writer, for a decade. I recently retired my blog because it was focused on just one location.

I’m now more interested in what the rest of the world has to offer.

While I write a huge variety of topics on Medium, it took me no time flat to earn a top writer badge in Travel. Guess it’s impossible to get away from what you’re passionate about, huh?

Travel has changed my life in ways I could never fully explain to a non-traveler. It has opened my eyes, my heart, and my soul to epic proportions. So why stop a good thing?

I have always dreamed of being completely location independent - a writer on the run. Medium has given us a platform to do just that….earn an income while traveling. So let’s take advantage of it!

What will be a good fit for this publication?

First and foremost, we want GREAT and ENGAGING writing. In the past, I have accepted mediocre (and dry-ish) stories but I want to flip that script now. I want your submissions to be as if they were an incredible book the reader can’t put down.

Don’t just tell us where you went, take us along with you! We’re less interested in the price of admission at tourist attractions, and far more interested in how it changed your perspective or your life.

Your submission should center around travel, whether local or international. Every destination is a vacation for someone, even if it’s your hometown.

Submissions can be about (but not limited to) the following:

  1. Life changing travel.
  2. The lighter side of travel. Everyone loves a good laugh.
  3. Expat life.
  4. Travel tips and tricks.
  5. Bucket listing.
  6. Cool places you’ve stayed.
  7. Cultural stories.
  8. Romance while traveling.

Those are just some ideas to get you started but as us travelers know, pretty much everything on the road is a story!

How to become a contributor:

Send an email to kristi@writtenbykristi.com with the subject line of Writers on the run. In the email please include your Medium profile and a little intro about why you’d like to contribute.

Once you’re added as a writer: You’ll be notified via email, and then you can submit your stories by creating an original draft, clicking on the three little dots in the top right corner, and selecting Writers on the Run. I’ll receive the submission, review it, and publish. If, for any reason it is not accepted I’ll let you know why.

I really hate to reject any articles so please make sure your story is engaging and travel related.

Must haves for each submission: Clear and focused writing that makes a point. PLEASE check your spelling, grammar and punctuation so I don’t have to send it back. I’m not into taking the time to edit little things. Also, no previously published Medium stories.

No clickbait, no affiliate links. Save that for your own travel blog. Stories published for the purpose of selling third party products will not be accepted.

Please keep Medium curation guidelines in mind:

“Curators are looking for thoughtful, clearly written pieces that tell a compelling story, convey an interesting idea, or share a smart point of view. These can take many forms …We explicitly do not want to distribute misinformation, stories with clickbait headlines, stories that are primarily marketing a product or service, stories that use photos that the author doesn’t have the rights to use, or stories with excessive typos and errors.”

Tag your story appropriately. This helps readers find your work and helps me publish it under the correct tab.

Since these are travel stories feel free to use your own beautiful or captivating travel photography. Or you can find free images on Pixabay, Unsplash, and numerous other sites. Please credit all photography appropriately. If there is no photo attribution your piece won’t be published.

Artists should always be credited for their work and we, as writers should understand this point.

One more thing! I’m a one-man show right now so once you’ve submitted a draft please allow time for me to publish it. I should be able to publish every morning.

If you’re interested in coming on board as an editor please express your interest via email at kristi@writtenbykristi.com

The point of this publication is to provide a central place to share our unique travel experiences. If you’re mindful of all the guidelines, we’ll be putting out GREAT work which attracts more followers. That’s the point!

Looking forward to checking out your travel stories!
