Even after writing 100 blogs, I still feel I am still a newbie. I am earning about $200–300 per month, but still have no clue what makes an article viral.

I have a good understanding of how to write an article that would get curated. But that does not mean you will set the platform on fire with views.

I have created magic occasionally with only a few articles that took my statistics by storm. As the storm settles my earnings come down too.

I guess to get more viral articles I need to write a lot more. Medium is full of articles that motivate you to write at least an article every day.

I mostly write tech articles. The only thing I understand from my experience is generic topics get more views than specific ones. But have no clue about the ingredients that make an article viral.

What I have learned

There is absolutely no way to predict if the story is going to be viral or will get only a handful of views. I wrote a bunch of great stories relevant to current affairs but had no luck.

Will I ever figure out the formula of a viral story? I don’t think so.

I used to feel happy to see “Chosen for further distribution” tag on my articles. Unknowingly I cracked the code to get my articles curated. But there is a very limited overlap between the curated articles and the viral ones.

The only way to go viral

Based on what I have learned so far I could figure out that if I do these things right, I have a chance to write more viral articles —

  • Write more — Write more and more articles will go viral.
  • Be more consistent — I have not been very consistent when it comes to writing. Being consistent helps you convert more ideas or topics into articles.
  • Great titles — The title of the story is the first interface to the reader.
  • Personal opinions catch eyeballs — One thing I could learn from my viral posts is readers love your personal experiences and opinions.
  • Rewrite — key to good writing. Every time you edit your article there is a bit of improvement.

Parting Words

I never imagined myself writing blogs a couple of years ago. If I can write, anyone can.

Consistency is the key. You can find your niche and your path by consistently writing every day. Virality is hard to understand. But if you write more you have better chances of getting viral.

I hope you enjoyed reading this. If you’d like to support me as a writer, consider signing up to become a Medium member. It’s just $5 a month and you get unlimited access to Medium.
