3 Ways to Wrap Up a Medium Post
You always need “final thoughts”
Never end an article without final thoughts. In some cases, you may as well not have written the article without making your reason for writing it clear. Final thoughts are your main point condensed — they’re the payoff for the reader. And, most of the time they include your solution to whatever problem you raised earlier.
Keep readers…reading…by mixing up your endings in an authentic way.
Bold and beautiful
When you want your conclusion to be more integrated into the article, why not just make it another paragraph? My visual cue to readers that it’s the end of my thoughts is to bold the first thought of the paragraph, e.g.:
- “In conclusion”
- “My dilemma is”
- “Finally,…”
Here’s an example of one of my “bold and beautiful” endings:
By the way
“By the way” is a conversational and often seamless way to introduce a solution as your conclusion. As you probably already know, you always need to present solutions to the problem(s) you raise in your writing.
Ending the article by sticking a solution to your reader is a bold and decisive way to say “how about we do this instead.”
elena vellani rocked this when they sealed their solution in an intriguing story, adding the short and sweet sentence at the end as the only explanation needed for how the paragraph provides a solution.
New section to make the connection
I’m referring to this:
If you want to end more subtly, this is the way to go. I like to use the section divider that looks like an expanded ellipsis when I feel there’s a continuous thought process &c. from the last point to the conclusion.
Here’s an example of one of my “new section” endings:
There are so many ways to end an article — these are just three of them. Integrate your ending with simply another paragraph, add new information with “by the way,” or subtly transition with an ellipsis pause.
