Before Dr. Phil McGraw had an afternoon talk show, he was a nobody who happened to get hired as Oprah’s jury consultant after she got herself into a mess of trouble down in Texas.

Dr. Phil won over Oprah with his no-nonsense “Aw shucks, you better face facts, lady” brand of down-home smarts. In part, thanks to him, Oprah won the much-publicized case brought against her by beef industry executives.

With Oprah’s endorsement in his saddlebag, Dr. Phil wrote a book called, “Life Strategies.” It opens with a story showing a side of Oprah most people don’t get to see and a side of Dr. Phil the world was about to see a lot more of. This book is excellent even if you hate his “How’s that working for you?” approach.
