Shirl arrives at the Albany by 11am. First in the house — first of the day…half-a lager an-a whiskey chaser. All week she cares not about her demeanour; hungover from the night before, but Friday’s…

“Friday’s Shirl’s night” …well, every night is.

Fridays are special.

She gets her hair done, make-up and necklace on and arrives around 9:10pm, after Dynasty. Glides past customers champing dominoes — crossing the sticky vinyl floor to her corner and sits…stroking her Pearls. Krystle Carrington — for one night only. With Lando the DJ, she dances the last dance…

Before becoming Shirl for another week.

Albany Nights was written as part of an online fun Drabble with “Pearl’ as the prompt, in July 2022. The characters are derived from customers in a bar I once frequented as a student.
