Being Joyful Even When I’m Unhappy

How I learned to be consistently joyful, even when life sucks

Life is full of its ups, downs, and everything in between. My emotional, mental and even at times physical state changed as rapidly as my circumstances did. In all the many seasons I walked through in life, I always let the current situation dictate my feelings. That’s until I discovered Joy, and learned how I could remain joyful, even when I was unhappy.

Some years ago, I was going through some tough challenges. I was enrolled in a college I didn’t like, a job that I hated, had little to no friends and living a life that felt unfulfilled. The road ahead seemed empty and the adventure I had hoped life would be, was lost. Enduring this for just under two years took me to some pretty dark places. I had undiagnosed depression, gained 30 pounds, and was far from the person I used to be. All of these things happened because of the situation I was in and allowing my mental and emotional states to be immersed by my circumstances.

Eventually, enough was enough and I needed an escape. Anything to get away from the life that I was in. I came across an opportunity to do a Humanitarian Aid course where I would spend three months learning, then three months in the field overseas.
