How being a Black cop did not prevent mistreatment.

Bernard Robins joined the Los Angeles Police Department three years ago with pride and the hope of making a difference in the community. His pride of being a cop went right out the window on the fateful day when he was stopped, detained, and handcuffed by fellow officers for a traffic stop while off duty.

As Robins sat in his car, he stated that he could feel his fellow officers’ glare on his back, so he did the right thing. He exited his car with his hands up so they wouldn’t shoot him. He did everything not to trigger any negative reactions from these three Los Angeles police officers. Hands in the air, no sudden movements, and even kept his tone of voice low as he announced that he was a police officer. So disrespectful, they handcuffed him.

South of the Santa Monica Freeway, this type of behavior from LA police officers is the norm for Black and Latino residents where they are made to sit on the curb and watch as their cars are searched. Residents have complained about these officers’ behavior. The neighborhood where Robins was stopped looked out of place and was unusual.

When Robins joined the police force he believed that he could make a difference in the very communities that had been and is intimidated and often harassed by the LAPD officers…
