Being motivated feels better but being disciplined gets things done.

Most of us have thought about our bucket list. If you’re unfamiliar with the term and haven’t seen the movie The Bucket List with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman and don’t care about spoilers, then let me break it down for you. We are all going to die!

Yes. Very sad, I know. Anyways.

The idea is to have a list of things you want to do before you kick the bucket (die). Some of these things are simple and require little to no talent like riding a roller coaster, sky diving, and making a 6ix9ine song.

Other things are a little more complicated that requires a lifetime of focus and discipline with a dash of motivation. These things may be something like becoming a CEO, inventing something, or designing a dragon onesie.

Utilizing only motivation to get the complicated and difficult things done would be the dream, but it's also completely unrealistic for the majority of us. Those who wait for motivation will never turn their passions into a career.

How To Use Motivation

Motivation has a purpose, but you shouldn’t rely on it to sustain your attempts. Instead, use it to lay down a foundation of disciplined designed to make you succeed at a goal using that temporary motivation.

The Foundation

  1. Set daily habits that will improve your odds of success. Repeat until it’s as regular as the air your breath.
  2. Have a weekly, monthly, and yearly goal and write it down. Make sure you have small goals that are manageable and cross them off one at a time. As my mom always said “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

Final Thoughts

When your motivation is gone, and you feel uninspired you will be grateful for disciplined sustaining and building on your progress. You will also find that eventually, discipline is another path to motivation.
