Getting Out Of The Rabbit Hole

When I was 7, I used to believe in Big Foot.

I was a child with an active imagination hoping that cryptic creatures existed. At the time I didn’t want my sense of wonder to allude to me. The skepticism toward my beliefs ultimately pushed me away from meaningful discussion for a long time.

Growing up I felt lost and rejected.

I had different interests than other children. While kids my age were worried about football, wrestling, basketball, or toys I was more awestruck by the wonders of the natural world. This sense of wonder did not help me make friends and often excluded me from social circles, this caused me to be even more entrenched in my beliefs.

Isolation, as we see on social media, does not help a person think from a different perspective, but it can encourage them to double down. Breaking this cycle is extremely difficult and tends to cause discomfort. But this discomfort is necessary for growth.

My perspective began to shift once I opened myself up to people who questioned what I believes. I learned it wasn’t a bad thing to question what you know, this included Big Foot.
