(Based on real incidents)

Sahil and his sister Shweta lived with their widowed mother Saraswati, who worked as a maid in different homes all day long. She made sure her kids were well-fed and educated. Sahil after completing his education worked as an intern at an architectural firm while his baby sister had one year to complete graduation. Meanwhile, Sarswati started looking for proposals for the girl as she needed to be married off soon after she graduated.

One morning, the neighbor came to their home with a proposal of an auto-rickshaw driver, who liked Shweta from childhood. Sarawati quietly declined the proposal and said, she was looking for at least an educated guy for her daughter. She tried everything possible to make sure her daughter is married into a decent home but the proposals that came her way were not to her liking.

Shweta soon completed her graduation and started helping Sarswati with the homely duties. Sarswati was now desperate, she went to one of her employers and requested them to help her in finding a suitable boy for her daughter. They suggested their driver’s son, who was educated but was looking for a job for more than a year. Sarswati was now hopeful as their family agreed to marry Shweta. They came to meet Shweta and fixed the marriage date but if only 1 lakh cash was given at the marriage venue. They said it was for the boy to set up his own business.

Saraswati agreed and took a loan from her employer and started to prepare for her marriage. Shweta unhappy with the dowry claim tries to convince Saraswati to not marry her off in that family. But Saraswati was a single woman who needed to marry her daughter as soon as possible as it was her biggest responsibility. Sahil also took a bank loan for the marriage and made sure his sister was married like their father would have wanted to.

After marriage, Shweta soon learned about everyone’s needs and made herself a good housewife. Her husband kept her happy, he established his own electrical shop and they lived happily.

Six months later, Sahil was on his way to buy a gift for his sister’s birthday when he was invited by her in-laws to attend her birthday party. He hadn't spoken to her for the last three months as she always made excuses to talk to him on the phone. But this news made him happy and he bought a bracelet for her and went to her birthday party with his mother.

When they reach their home there was no party going on there but instead, the house was silent. Sahil and Saraswati were greeted by her in-laws who had a ghostly look on their faces. They were asked to sit in the living room and to wait there. Saraswati felt uneasy by the eerie vibe of the house.

Shweta’s husband came out and asked Sahil to come into the house with him. Sahil follows him to her bedroom only to fall on the door frame with what he saw in front of his eyes. His sister was hanging from the ceiling fan dressed beautifully.

One month later, the cops declared it was a suicide because of mental instability. But Sahil refused to believe them saying, “His sister was totally fine, and even if she did suicide there has to be a reason”.

He visited her in-laws in an attempt to find some clue about her life there. He told her husband that he had come to take her belongings and started to inspect the room but found no clue as the police had done a search and found nothing. He packed her stuff, her clothes, shoes, her educational documents, and all the things that belonged to her.

He came home, locked himself with her stuff, and wailed like a baby thinking how could his happy sister kill herself so easily. He arranged all of her stuff in her cupboard and went through her education certificates wondering how she was the topper in her class. In the middle of the documents was a handwritten letter. He immediately recognized his sister’s handwriting, wiped his tears, and started reading.

Dear Sahil Bhai,

Don’t show this letter to Ma as she would get worried. My life here was initially fine but soon Rakesh lost his business and the money you gave him. He started forcing me to get more money from you and ma. I refused, so he started arguing with me, and sometimes when drunk he hits me too. I tried to tolerate all this because ma would get worried she was already sick these days. I’m a strong woman I will leave this man soon but I needed to plan it well. He doesn’t let me leave the house or talk to you. I’m writing this letter and will send it a day after my birthday through the mail so that you can get help to save me from this hell house.

Don’t tell Ma anything yet, just come late in the night so that I can escape from here.

Love Shweta.

Angry and devastated Sahil went to the police and told them everything showing the letter. Rakesh and his family got arrested he confessed to the police that on her birthday he decided to kill her. He gave her some drugs and hung her by the ceiling and also bribed those policemen to hide the autopsy report. The entire family was declared guilty by the court and given life imprisonment.

A year later Saraswati looked from her window, the auto-rickshaw driver now drove a car he got on loan along with his smiling wife by his side.

The end.
