How and Why I chose Copywriting over Content Writing?
Do you want to earn a decent amount per month from your writing? Have you ever thought about copywriting? Is “earning from blogging” is not working in your case? Are you still unaware of the advantages of copywriting?
— In this blog, I am going to share my experience as a copywriter and how I got benefited from that. Again, I will explain some tips that will be helpful, if you want to start your career as a copywriter.
How I started my Freelance Content Writing?
— I started my freelance writing in the year 2013–14. At that time, I was introducing myself as a content writer in my profile bio. At that time, I had a misconception that all kinds of creative writings come under the category of content writing. So, I signed up on few freelancing websites and updated my profile as a content writer. Again, I placed gigs for the category of creative content writing. Fiverr and Upwork (o-desk at that time) were my only hope to get good offers. So, everything was all set and I was applying for all the works on these two websites.
What was my goal in the first two-three years?
— As a beginner, it was quite difficult for me to get good writing offers. Most of the buyers usually verify the profile ratings and feedbacks, before offering any project. Because I started newly, so no one was actually willing to hand over me their important works. Instead, those buyers preferred those sellers who have good ratings, certifications and previous work experience. I had none of these at that time. After a lot of struggle when I failed to get a good writing assignment, I started analysing my strategies and concentrated on how to get out of this deadlock of repeated failures.
— It’s so weird to tell you that, I get most of my creative or innovative ideas while sleeping. In the middle of the night, I suddenly wake up and pen down whatever strategy comes to my mind. I have this weird habit till now and it’s actually very funny. During those initial years, one night I woke up from my sleep and thought, “Why am I applying for long-term and tough writing works? Instead of that, I should apply for some quick projects that can be completed within a short period of time and also I can gather many quick reviews for my profile.” In most of the top freelancing websites, they consider the numbers of completed projects and the positive feedbacks or reviews of the client in order to upgrade the seller profile’s ranking. After that, I started applying for easy and short-term projects. I started gathering as much as positive feedbacks from different clients who were impressed with my good quality work.
— By the year 2016, I started writing for clients with good and long-term projects. Though the payment of these clients was quite high as compared to those clients with whom I started writing, but still I was not getting continuous work offers from them. It was like 2–3 works per month and the rest of the time I was sitting idle. Then, I again gave a thought about this and concentrated on finding some efficient solution for this issue.
How I switched to Copywriting from Content Writing?
— In the year 2017, I came across the term “copywriting” and I did thorough research on this dimension of writing. Copywriting is a special kind of writing when you are focusing on the sales of a company or a brand. In this writing style, you should more concentrate on product-specific or service-specific writings. So, the major objective of copywriting is different from content writing. I would love to explain these differences in detail in my next blog. I will also explain, how you can enhance your copywriting skills.
— Now let’s go back to 2017, I started applying for copywriting offers after polishing my writing skills as a copywriter. I went through a number of different tutorials and also did few demo copywriting assignments as a part of those tutorials. Luckily within a week, I got 2–3 writing offers from two Singapore-based companies. They asked me to write a sample blog for them in order to evaluate my writing quality. Surprisingly, they loved those writings and offered me 10–12 offers back to back. I must say, their payment was also very good. Then, I started making more connections and continued writing for some more companies and websites. In the subsequent time, I signed NDA with 5–6 Singapore-based companies and started writing content for them.
— Till date , I work for those companies as a copywriter and I never run out of projects. In my opinion, if you want to get frequent and well-paid writing works, then copywriting is the best option you can explore. You can also go through different tutorials about copywriting to enhance your skills.
