How I was Creatively Inspired by a Beaten up Old Shop Window Model.

Once upon a time an old shop window mannequin languished in a dusty junk shop — a true story.

Luckily for her, Lucy, as she became known, was rescued from the dark and dusty junk shop by a mildly deranged woman (moi) who was having an existential crisis because she didn’t know what kind of artist she was.

The deranged woman didn’t know whether she most wanted to be a painter, a photographer or a writer. Or the latest thing — a mosaic artist sticking broken ceramic tiles on things.

I can’t be much of an artist, she thought, or I’d just know what I want to be. But I can’t decide. I want to do it all.

And now she had brought home this tacky old shop model. What for? The idea at first was to stick bits of tiles all over the model, Lucy, to make a spectacular garden ornament. But it seemed a shame to bury her lovely face under glue and tiles.

Paint seemed like a better option. When you got tired of how she looked, thought the woman, you could create a new look, with different props, different colors, and fabrics and…
