How to Teach Your Kid to Make Art

Believe it or not, teaching art to kids is just about the easiest thing you can do. Well, maybe not the easiest, but in direct correlation with the rewards it garners, you will be surprised at just how easy it is.

Making art, or dinner, or clothing, poems, music, or mini-kingdoms…anything that requires the child’s imagination, is the first step to raising courageous children, and this is why; when you ask your children to create, you’re asking them to innovate, to imagine a thing that was not there previously. It does not matter if what your child makes is good or bad, what matters is that they engage in a process which is unpredictable and fraught with challenges. Once your child starts practicing imagining and creating things that were not there before, or what I like to call “making”, they will have started down the path to innovation, and once they start down that path, entire worlds will be available to them. This simple practice will ensure that when challenges arise, they will be able to see themselves as a person with solutions.

The way you ask your children to make thing is important. You must convey to them that it is not the rightness or beauty in the thing that matters, but that they express some sort of opinion or feeling within what they make. If your child paints a painting or makes a…
