When Miguel arrived in my office the first thing that I noticed about him was his dress. My office was in the middle of a restaurant under construction and the scene was a bit of a hot mess. As the drywall dust settled around him he sat down across from me. His leather dress shoes were spit-shined. His pants had a crispy crease. His dress shirt was blindingly white. And his hair was Marine Corps perfect. This was a guy who came to get hired.

I liked him right away. He had a friendly and easy way about him. I once dated a guy who owned a big company and he told me that he had a singular requirement for all of his employees — they had to be nice. Miguel was nice.

I scanned his resume and could see that he had some good experience… and he was nice. Things were going well. I like to get past the dry resumé part quickly and get to the juicier banter part of an interview. I want to see what their personality is like. And I want to see if they will get along with the team. I want to lower the interview veil and get to the person behind it.
