I want to start off by saying I was not slaving away on Medium in order to get a 67 cents payout. I joined Medium in November of 2020 after years of putting it off. Within my first week, I became a writer for a publication and was published by them almost immediately. I wish I could say my writing took off but that would be a lie.

I gave up rather quickly.

When I say I gave up, I don’t mean I flung my laptop and declared I’d never write on Medium again. I simply stopped writing. Life, children, and my own procrastination led me to ignore my Medium account.

Sure, I read stories and commented on posts for a while but then the site became a distant memory. I missed it but made no real effort to apply myself.

I wrote so many posts then abandoned them in my drafts. I focused way too much on creating content that fit certain publications rather than writing from my heart and finding a publication that fit my work. Truthfully, I could have just skipped worrying about pubs altogether and publish my post without one.

Comparison killed my willpower

Like I said before, I was still reading posts. Medium always sent me articles to read…
