They say knowledge is power. And it’s so indisputably true.

Unfortunately for me, I didn’t have a lot of knowledge when I started my career…

As a first-generation college grad, I knew absolutely nothing about the corporate world.

I’ll never forget when I interviewed for my eventual first corporate job on my 22nd birthday.

When the offer came a few days later, I was so excited about the chance at a job like that.

I wasn’t going to be picky, and I didn’t ask a lot of questions.

I accepted the role for a $42,000 salary.

Yes, it was that low.

But it was a high-growth startup, so I also received equity in the company (that may or may not materialize into anything).

“The salary sucks but I’ll have to work my way up,” I thought.

Little did I know, things would change more rapidly than I ever thought to be possible.

About 7 months after starting that first job, I gained access to every person in the company’s salary.
