My First Written Story
At least, I think it was my first written story
The very first story I wrote (or at least the earliest one I can remember) was about my cat “Pepper” battling my army of toy soldiers. It wasn’t exactly Pulitzer worthy but it got me hooked on a love for storytelling.
I may have done some mini-story exercises in third or fourth grade. I can’t remember. But I do remember this particular creative writing assignment in the fifth grade — that’s right, the 5th grade!
We were supposed to write a story and then read the story in front of the whole class. As I recall, this was an assignment designed to test our penmanship (I wrote it on lined paper), our presentation skills, and our creativity.
I decided to write about my cat, who was fairly new to our family. We had found him abandoned and adopted him. And, since I loved playing with those green plastic Army men (as shown in the picture above), I had an idea!
You see, I enjoyed watching those Godzilla movie reruns after school. Does anyone else remember those? The ones from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, with the cheap monster costumes, cheesy effects, and dubbed English? Well, as a kid, I loved them.
So, I decided to pit my cat Pepper against my army of green plastic soldiers. I even had a plastic battle tank…
