In February 2023, I decided to pitch to magazines. It was my first time trying to write for publications. After endless brainstorming sessions, I came up with a title. The title sounded so beautiful, and I was proud of it. I imagined a wonderful story somewhere there, with my name at the top.

Only to find out that similar topics swarmed around the internet. Funny, right? We think our ideas are unique and that we’d become an overnight sensation. Sadly, to realize that the world does the same things differently.

Think about it. This very second, there are millions of creators like you. Some are likely thinking the same thing as you. Maybe they’d grab the opportunity before you blink at the screen.

The truth is, nobody cares about what you have to say. They only care about what they learn from you and your work. Don’t panic yet. Your story is worthwhile if you tell it the right way.

How To Make Your Stories Interesting?

  1. Tell Raw Stories

This is a no-brainer. You type what you learned in a day, and you’re done. People will love you for it.

Wrong.

Writing a story takes more than typing your experiences. It connects with your readers on a deeper level — it transports them to a world of knowledge and empathy.

Think of yourself as writing a journal, and similarly, share your stories. There shouldn’t be glamorous cover-ups of ugly incidents. There’s a reason you thought of writing about them. So, do it anyway.

2. Get Specific

Sure, writing a story is easy-peasy. After all, who knows your life better than you? But it doesn’t stop there.

A worthwhile story has splendid specifics. The day, date, what you wore, what happened to your cat, etc. Paint a picture in your reader’s head. Take them into your world and make them live in the moment.

3. Undershare

Contrary to the above, under-sharing can be a great way to gain attention. Include facts and events from your story, but never overshare your personal details.

The internet is a loving place until your luck is good. The other face isn’t pretty, and for safety reasons, avoid sharing details like credit cards, addresses, passwords, and more.

4. Read The Room

Imagine that the readers are gathered in a room to listen to you. Would you narrate a joke to someone who’s crying? The same goes for writing on the internet.

There are millions of stories shared every second. To make yours unique, read the algorithm and the people. It should give you a good head start on the types of well-performing articles.

5. Give a Take-away Message

The other day, a newsletter from a well-known creator shocked me. It was packed with vulnerability. I wondered how someone could put so much information out publicly.

But, you see, the creator decided to put it out there. Experienced creators know that some people are going to judge them constantly. But this will not stop them from building stories that benefit their audience.

It’s because they want to help people through their experiences. Their stories have a takeaway—a lesson or an everlasting experience.

The next time you write, ask yourself: Do you want to share your life history or a valuable lesson for the reader?

Good luck with writing beautiful stories that people love to read!
